Style Categories 101: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Signature Look

Creating a signature style goes beyond just picking out clothes—it’s about building a personal brand that reflects who you are and how you want to show up in the world.

As a style educator and closet curator, I work with clients to help them define their unique aesthetic through style categories. These categories guide outfit choices and ensure every look is consistent with their personal brand. So, how do you identify, define, and apply style categories to curate your wardrobe that feels both authentic and empowering?

What Are Style Categories?

Style categories are broad themes or vibes that describe your overall aesthetic. When you categorize your style into two or three main categories, you can curate a more cohesive wardrobe that aligns with your identity and personal goals. Think of style categories as the building blocks of your personal brand—they help you make intentional choices that communicate your personality.

Why Define Your Style Categories?

By defining specific style categories, you’ll:

  • Simplify your wardrobe by focusing on pieces that fit within these categories (and eliminate Wardrobe Decision Fatigue! – more on that later)
  • Increase your confidence by wearing clothes that represent your true self (no more digging through your closet for hours only to re-wear that same outfit you don’t truly love!)
  • Create a personal brand that feels cohesive and intentional (this is what people remember you by. Your outfit is one of the first messages you send out into the world – so what message do you want to convey?)

Common Style Categories

Some examples of style categories include:

  • Chic
  • Bohemian
  • Minimalist
  • Edgy
  • Classic
  • Playful

While these are common categories, your personal style might mix elements from different ones. For instance, a combination of “bohemian,” “chic,” and “playful” can reflect a free-spirited yet polished personality with a touch of fun – it can be creative, professional, and charming!

Step 1: Identify Your Core Style Categories

To get started, pick up three main categories that resonate most with your style preferences and lifestyle. If you’re unsure, start by considering the following questions:

  • What words do you want people to use when describing your style?
  • Which looks make you feel the most like yourself?
  • Are there specific outfits or styles you often gravitate towards?

Your categories can evolve as your style journey progresses. They serve as an anchor to help guide you in finding items that reflect your personality, even if they don’t adhere strictly to one category.

Example of Style Categories in Action

For me, my core style categories are “bohemian,” “chic,” and “playful.” These categories would influence your choices in different ways:

  • Bohemian: Look for flowing silhouettes, earthy tones, and patterns like paisleys or florals. Oh, and lots of layers!
  • Chic: For a sophisticated touch, focus on clean lines, tailored fits, and a neutral color palette. This style is great for professional settings.
  • Playful: Add pops of bright colors or quirky accessories to keep the look fun and approachable. (think funky purses or exotic shoes!)

These categories guide what to buy and wear while allowing for flexibility in expression.

Step 2: Create a Style Vision Board

Visual aids like a vision board can help you see your categories come together cohesively. Gather images from Pinterest, fashion magazines, or even your closet representing each category. Look for patterns in the images, such as color schemes, textures, and silhouettes, to guide your future purchases and outfit choices. Additionally, you can also look to your favorite influencers, celebrities, and fashion icons (even within your own network!) who you’re constantly inspired by!

Color Palette and Style Categories

If you’re new to categorizing your wardrobe, start with colors. Associating a color palette with each category is a straightforward way to create cohesion:

  • Bohemian: Earthy colors like browns, greens, and warm oranges. I love Bohemian because it reminds me of fall – and Halloween is my favorite holiday. People associate me with these things, so dressing in a similar, flowy, muted fashion resonates with this category.
  • Chic: Neutrals such as black, white, and beige. This doesn’t mean you can have color, but there’s more intention behind it. For example, if you’re attending a business event, an all-black outfit with a pink blazer can feel empowering as it has quiet confidence.
  • Playful: Bold, bright colors like bright red, hot pink or even pastels outside of “everyday” wear can garner attention. If you’re curious about a playful style but unsure of where to start, try carrying a fun, seasonal purse like a jack-o-lantern around Halloween or a strawberry-shaped tote for spring.

Color psychology plays a big role in how your outfit is perceived. Different colors evoke different emotions and can be a simple way to align your outfit with the desired vibe. Each style category has its own set of color tones, but you get to decide what colors you love. While opting for a color analysis can be a great way to find your best colors, understanding what message each color conveys can also play a huge role in personal branding – whether you’re branding your style (outfit) or styling your brand(business)!

Step 3: Choose Key Pieces for Each Category

Once your categories and color palettes are defined, focus on identifying key pieces for each category. Key pieces are the wardrobe staples that most clearly convey the essence of each style category. They can range from tops and pants to accessories like scarves, hats, or jewelry.

Key Pieces Example for Style Categories

Here’s how to select key pieces if your categories are “bohemian,” “chic,” and “playful”:

  • Bohemian Key Pieces: Peasant tops, fringe jackets, flowy maxi skirts, layers, and woven handbags.
  • Chic Key Pieces: Structured blazers, tailored trousers, simple blouses, and minimal jewelry.
  • Playful Key Pieces: Graphic tees, colorful skirts, bold prints and patterns, or even statement jewelry.

Selecting key pieces allows you to experiment within each category while maintaining a sense of structure. You don’t have to wear every category at once; rather, your wardrobe will feel cohesive across different occasions. (Though you absolutely can—that’s why it’s your personal brand!)

Step 4: Align Your Style Categories with Your Lifestyle

A common question is, “Do all outfits need to align with my style categories?” The short answer is no. Some categories may be more relevant to your day-to-day attire, while others suit specific occasions or moods.

For example, if you categorize your style as “chic,” “bohemian,” and “playful,” your office attire may lean towards “chic” if there is a specific uniform or style rule. For activities like the gym, where your outfit focus is function rather than style branding, it’s okay if these categories don’t necessarily apply (but they totally can!)

When to Mix Style Categories

Feel free to mix and match elements from each style category. For instance, a “chic” blazer paired with a “bohemian” dress can create a unique look that reflects both sophistication and comfort. The goal is to reflect your personality while staying versatile.

Step 5: Refresh Your Wardrobe

Creating a personal brand for your wardrobe is an ongoing journey. As you evolve, so will your style. Periodically revisit your style categories to see if they still align with your personality and lifestyle. Donate or repurpose pieces that no longer resonate, and look for new items that fit your categories. This is where seasonal styling can be highly beneficial for an updated and refreshed look – while staying true to your cohesive personality branding.

Practical Tips for Maintaining Your Wardrobe

  • Set Seasonal Reviews: Review your wardrobe at the start of each season, focusing on items that embody your style categories.
  • Identify Missing Pieces: If you notice gaps in certain categories, make a list of items to purchase.
  • Experiment with Accessories: Accessories like scarves, belts, and jewelry can transform outfits, allowing you to explore each category with minimal cost.

Building a Signature Style Through Style Categories

Creating a wardrobe that reflects your personal brand is a process of self-discovery. By identifying and embracing your core style categories, you can curate a wardrobe that is authentically you. Style is a personal journey, and there is no need to feel rushed, especially when identifying pieces that align with your business goals or everyday lifestyle. Focus on selecting pieces that make you feel confident and true to yourself is essential – and certainly change over time!
